About this conversion

HEIC is the format iPhones save photos in by default. Converting to PNG gives you a lossless, universally-supported file -- useful before editing, layering, or anywhere a tool specifically requires PNG rather than a compressed photo format.

Frequently asked questions

Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which HEIC can also carry (e.g. some stickers/cutouts). If you just want a normal photo for sharing, JPG is usually the better, smaller choice -- see HEIC to JPG.

Does this work in every browser?

HEIC decoding depends on your browser having a built-in decoder. Safari usually can; Chrome and Firefox often can’t. If decoding fails here, that’s your browser’s limitation -- try Safari, or export as JPG directly from your iPhone’s share sheet instead.

Will the file be larger than the original HEIC?

Usually yes -- PNG is lossless, so it stores more data than HEIC’s efficient compressed format.
